メッセンジャーRNA（mRNA）は新型コロナウイルス感染症に対するワクチンとして初めて実用化された、新しいクスリの材料（モダリティ）です。塩基配列を変えるだけでどのようなタンパク質を作ることも可能で、どのような細胞を標的とすることもできるので、その応用の可能性はコロナウイルスワクチンだけでなく、その他多くの感染症ワクチン、がんの治療用ワクチン、さらに種々の疾患治療用医薬品として、その可能性は無限大です。
本研究室はこのmRNAを用いた創薬に早くから取り組み、mRNA分子設計、送達システム（DDS）、そしてmRNAワクチン・治療用mRNA医薬の開発を進めています。変形性関節症の軟骨変性抑制・再生に効果を示すmRNA医薬は、本研究室での研究成果を元に開発が進められ、我が国初の治療用mRNA医薬品として臨床試験がスタートしました。また筋ジストロフィー、虚血性脳疾患、脊髄損傷、精神神経疾患（自閉症）といった多くの重篤疾患・外傷に対するmRNA医薬の可能性を明らかとしました。合成生物学、工学、化学、医学を広く融合したClinical Biotechnologyをテーマに、新しいmRNA創薬の実現を目指して努力しています。​

 

Messenger RNA (mRNA) represents a transformative new modality in medicine: first realized through COVID-19 vaccines, but now poised to reshape the future of healthcare. Because mRNA can be designed to produce virtually any protein and delivered precisely to target cells, it holds immense potential to address diseases once considered untreatable.
Our laboratory has been an early pioneer in mRNA-based drug development, advancing research in mRNA molecular design, delivery systems (DDS), and the development of mRNA vaccines and therapeutic mRNA medicines. Among our key achievements, an mRNA therapeutic developed from our laboratory’s research, designed to suppress cartilage degeneration and promote cartilage regeneration in osteoarthritis, has entered clinical trials as Japan’s first therapeutic mRNA medicine. We have also demonstrated the potential of mRNA therapeutics for several severe and complex conditions, including muscular dystrophy, ischemic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and neuropsychiatric disorders.
Bridging synthetic biology, engineering, chemistry, and medicine, our mission is to advance the field of Clinical Biotechnology and realize a new generation of mRNA-based therapeutics that redefine the future of medicine.
